ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Julie Kenny honed her photographic skills in analogue-based film photography, utilising 35mm, medium and large format cameras during her tertiary studies. After completing an Advanced Diploma of Applied Science in Photography, Julie furthered her studies at Edith Cowan University, undertaking a Bachelor of Communications. After completing a Diploma of Education, Julie continued to share her enthusiasm for both the analogue and digital photography mediums with her secondary students for over 17 years. Since leaving the education sector, Julie merged her knowledge of the traditional mediums with new technologies, gaining a commercial drone licence. Since this undertaking her work has strongly focused on highlighting the beauty of regional locations.

Growing up in a number of outback towns developed Julie’s love of exploring landscapes, strong cups of tea and a good chinwag. One of Julie’s favorite pastimes is travelling to distant places, soaking up cultural experiences and exploring new spaces. Always keen for a road trip adventure, Julie regularly returns to her roots, exploring her own backyard, ‘wandering out yonder’ in the diverse landscapes of Western Australia.

Connecting with Boodja (Country) is such an important aspect of Julie’s photography. While drone photography has enabled us to capture landscapes using a newer technology, Julie feels it is important to acknowledge that this aerial perspective has been documented by Aboriginal people for thousands of years.

Julie is a CASA certified drone pilot - RePL, AROC and sub 25kg endorsement.

“The colour, pattern, and texture of the diverse, ever-changing landscapes of Western Australia are my inspiration. I aim to highlight details, which aren’t always visible when traveling through flat areas of the Wheatbelt, Mid-West and Goldfields regions. My goal in sharing my photographic vision is to highlight the importance of place and connect people with Country.”

Acknowledging Country is a significant aspect of Julie’s photographic practice. Every artist is influenced by the world around them, and the place which they call home. It is important that we keep in mind the lens through which we view the world, as it shapes artistic works and the intentions communicated by artists and photographers. These cultural contexts - our shared history, and shared future, are informed by the ways we understand each other, our actions, and respect for the land, skies, and waters, that we share.
